Last year we did a series of workshops which we named React Series: Zero to Hero. It’s a 4 hours intensive discussion and coding session designed for beginners to learn how to create small to medium-sized React applications.

This year, we brought back the same series with the same end goal in mind but instead of web applications, our participants should be able to create mobile applications after finishing the series.

This event won’t be possible without the help and support of our awesome partners LegalMatch Philippines and Facebook Developer Circle: Cebu City and more importantly from the huge and selfless efforts of React Cebu’s core group and members.

Did you know that our awesome speaker for this entire series was a participant of last year’s React Series: Zero to Hero? Yes, you heard that right. His name is Edbert Jason Estevez, a Software Engineer at Alliance Software but also a full-stack developer himself. We couldn’t be more thankful for him to rose to the occasion and volunteered to teach us React Native for the entire series. Wow. We’re humbled by his kindness in paying it forward for others. We hope nothing that we may meet more people like him.

Below are the sessions closing photo-op as always and the details of what went down per session.

React Native Series: Zero to Hero — 1st session (Mar 7, 2020)

After our very first session of React Native Series: Zero to Hero. 🔥

In this session, React Native was briefly introduced and shared why use React Native for mobile apps? We also got to learn Expo in this session which is a framework and a platform for universal React applications together with its advantages and disadvantages. Same with how the first session was done last year, the concepts for lifecycle methods, state, properties were explained in this session. Then more importantly in this session, our participants were able to create a simple layout of a todo application as an example below:

Hands-on on the basic layout and getting a taste of mobile elements and how to style them.

and a tiny counter app with increments and decrement functionality.

Learned to layout plus briefly tackling state, props, and functional component including hooks in one go.

React Native Series: Zero to Hero — 2nd session (Mar 14, 2020)

In this 2nd session, Edbert was focused to get to explain very well the navigation on mobile which is different from how it is on desktop using links and it was the highlight of this session.

After the 2nd session of React Native Series: Zero to Hero where our awesome speaker Edbert taught and walked us through React Native Navigation. 🔥

Things were great until we’re left with no other option but to put on hold our workshop series because of the severity of COVID 19. It’s been 2 months now since our last event and we would have finished this series by now plus a hackathon too like last year. But what’s important is we keep everyone self for we can always find another way to push through things and make a difference. 😊

Last March 20, we officially announced at our Facebook page that we’re putting on hold the series for the meantime.

We’re just getting started for sure. We’re a volunteer group and we could always get all the help anyone can offer. You could always leave us a message at React Cebu FB Page or write us an email at react@jscebu.org.
